Aberdeen sign defender Bwomono & sell Heltne Nilsen

Aberdeen have signed former St Mirren defender Elvis Bwomono, and sold midfielder Sivert Heltne Nilsen to Norwegian second-tier club FK Haugesund.

Bwomono, who can play at centre-back or right-back, joins to the end of the season after short trial period to help with an injury crisis in defence.

Aberdeen currently have Mats Knoester, Kristers Tobers, Tom McIntyre, and Nicky Devlin sidelined as they seek to avoid relegation from the Scottish Premiership.

Nilsen, 34, had been filling in at centre-back but asked to return to his homeland so he can be closer to his family and pursue coaching alongside his playing career.

Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson paid tribute to Nislen as an "outstanding professional" during his short time in charge.

He also said Bwomono, who he worked with for 18 months at previous club St Mirren, will add versatility to Aberdeen's backline.

"He's quick, athletic and comfortable operating in a back three, at full-back and even in midfield when needed," Robinson said.

"We brought him into Cormack Park this week to assess his fitness and sharpness, and he acquitted himself well, particularly in the bounce game [against Dundee] on Wednesday."

Bwomono has not played since leaving IBV in January, whom he joined last summer after leaving St Mirren.

He played 43 times for the Paisley club, helping them to consecutive top-six finishes in the Premiership.

Nilsen was one of former Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin's first recruits in the summer of 2024 having worked alongside him at Elfsborg, and played regularly last season at Pittodrie.

He started by helping the club to a record-breaking start to the season and ended the campaign with a Scottish Cup winners' medal despite missing the final against Celtic with an eye injury.

However, his minutes have been limited this term as Aberdeen struggled for form and Thelin lost his job, playing 23 times mostly as a substitute.

Nilsen said he was "incredibly grateful" for his time at Aberdeen.

"The start we made last season, and of course being part of the group that won the Scottish Cup, was amazing," Nilsen said.

"The scenes in May are something my family and I will never forget.

"This season has been disappointing, but I am confident that, with Stephen leading the team, we will finish strongly and build momentum again for next season."
