Coventry City last played in the Premier League in the 2000-01 season.

The Sky Blues finished in 19th place, picking up 34 points from the 38 games played.

They were just eight points away from safety when they were relegated to the Championship, alongside Manchester City and Bradford City.

This brought an end to their 34 consecutive years in the top flight, a run which lasted from 1967 to 2001.

Coventry were one of the founding members of the Premier League when it was established in 1992.

What happened to Coventry after relegation?

After relegation from the Premier League, Coventry spent the next 11 years in the Championship.

In the 2011-12 season, they were relegated to League One, and then to League Two in 2016-17 - before being re-promoted the following season.

The Sky Blues returned to the Championship in 2020, after they were named League One champions.

Coventry reached the FA Cup semi-final in the 2023-24 season, losing to Manchester United on penalties.

That season also saw them come close to a Premier League return, reaching the Championship play-off final in 2023, before losing to Luton town on penalties.

They once again reached the FA Cup semi-final in 2025, losing to Sunderland.

Since their Premier League relegation in 2001, Coventry have had 14 different managers.

Their current head coach is former England and Chelsea captain Frank Lampard, who took over in November 2024, guiding his side to a fifth-place finish last season.

How likely is it for Coventry to return to the Premier League?

This season's performance could result in direct promotion to the Premier League, as Lampard's side currently sit at the top of the Championship table, 10 points clear of second place Stoke City.

According to Opta's supercomputer, Coventry are heavy favourites for the Championship title, with a predicted 85% likelihood of winning the league.

They also have the highest chance of automatic promotion to the Premier League, - achieved through finishing either first or second place - which is predicted to be 94.9%.

There is a 4.7% predicted chance that Coventry would be in the promotion play-offs.
